Liver ultrasound when a laparotomy - Ärzteforum

Why you suggest a liver ultrasound when a laparotomy is about to be done on the patient? Surely you can't believe that U/S is better than our own eyes and hands?

Certainly not. But when we're planning surgery of this kind, we prefer to know beforehand if we'll have to resect liver simultaneously, and at what extent, - in order to prepare the patient properly for this aggressive kind of surgery, and to store adequate amount of blood as well. You see, in Poland donor blood is often a "bottleneck", that's why we always have this aspect in mind, - this is our stereotype :-(
