36 year old white female well nourished (actually obese) recently diagnosed with cystic fibrosis. Has family history of cystic fibrosis, patient herself just got every viral infection that went around every winter. Has a cousin also diagnosed in her 30's with cystic fibrosis.
Now has persistent x several weeks to months right lower abdominal pain, increased flatulence and profuse mucous ("you wouldn't believe it") in her stools.
Also has recent onset severe dysmenorrhea ("worse than labor pains") with normal pelvic ultrasound.
Referred to me for colonoscopy and at first I wasn't sure this was indicated, but a quick (and extremely superficial) Medline search showed that adults and later diagnosed cystic fibrosis patients can have many colon problems.
Would you recommend anything special during the colonoscopy? Special attention to any particular problems? Special numbers or locations of biopsies? Special other specimen collection?
How commonly do you see adult diagnosed cystic fibrosis patients?
